Do any of you have a grandmother who is a gardener?
To say she has a green thumb would be an understatement along the lines of "Eh, Coke is all right," when we all know that Coke is practically the nectar of the gods. {I know that even though I'm not drinking it any more, but that's another story.}
My grandmother was like that.
But not me.
It's as if plants are allergic to ME.
They've probably heard the rumors from their plant friends that living with me is, well, let's face it... a death sentence.
But that's all right.
I'm not offended.
Because while I can appreciate the gardener, I know what is way better than gardening.
EATING.
So, I'll do with the garden what is meant to be done with it.
EAT IT.
And today's project is a prime example...
I'll give you fair warning... there might be one million a few photos in this post :)
Because come on...
doesn't it just look yummy?!
Mint chocolate cakes baked in parchment lined seedling cups.
And all cuted up with Papertrey's new Garden Variety stamp set.
Seriously.
This is the moment that I knew that this project was meant to be:
I found these cutie pie seedling pots while wandering the garden section at Home Depot and thought to myself, "Self, those would be perfect to wrap something up in for my Garden Variety project. And wouldn't it be *perfect* if the new fence die fit around the edges?"
And, in a papercrafting miracle... it totally DID.
Insert angels singing "Hallelujah" {right here}.
It's possible that I did the happy dance at that discovery.
{I wouldn't try to picture that if I was you... my dancing skills are about on par with my gardening skills.}
Before we get to the fence die let me show you how I made the cakes.
Despite my post yesterday about not being a fancy cookie maker, I've made more than my fair share of homemade cakes. These are not those.
And by that I mean I used a cake mix.
{Cut me some slack here... I was flying by the seat of my pants and had no idea if the whole baking-the-seedling-cups idea would work.}
I did add some mint extract, though, so props to me :)
Now, funny thing, but my google search on "baking fiber seedling cups in the oven" turned up nothing. {What? You mean people don't want to bake in these all the time?} On the other hand, since the same search didn't turn up any articles that said "Whatever you do, DO NOT bake fiber seedling cups in the oven!" I felt pretty confident about moving forward with the bake-o-rama.
I did compromise between the two and lined the cups with a large square of parchment paper. I put the center of the square down into the cup in such a way that the cake batter sits only in the parchment paper without touching any part o fthe cup. {Yes, I am that person who loves divided cafeteria plates and actually own several of them, thankyouverymuch.}
Now if I was the Pioneer Woman, I'd have a beautiful picture of me smooshing the parchment paper down into the cups, but since I am quite obviously not her, you'll just have to imagine that all on your own. {And just how does she get all those beautiful pictures of herself doing everything?! She must have 6 arms, 4 of which she hides behind her back.}
I filled the cups up like so. I was going for 2/3 full, but I think I got overexcited and went a bit above that. I was torn because I didn't want the cake to touch the fiber cuts, but I did want the cake to puff up so that it went up over the top of the pots.
The cakes came out pretty perfect so I would do it the same way again.
Now for the {miraculous} fence.
I went ahead and did all the die cutting and all the stamping for the fence sections all at once. The woodgrain totally makes the fence come to life, doesn't it?
Because the pots have a slight angle, the top of the fence sections end up being a bit farther apart than the bottom of the sections so I only connected the top portions together. {That'll make sense in just a second, I swear.} I just used a small section of an extra cross piece to connect the two. {Hey, lookie... you can tell I'm using my oh-crap-I-made-a-mistake-scrap-pieces of kraft for this project. The front side's still good :)}
All that was needed to hold the fence section to the pot is a little mini glue dot in each corner.
Super fast; super easy.
Here we go round the
The smallest Limitless Label die fits several of the Garden Variety images perfectly. I cranked out a few then tied the twine around all of them and added the sign with a little foam tape.
Now. I may have used a cake mix but I have a thing about frosting.
For me... I go for either the store bought cake frosting that is nearly 100% sugar and gets all crunchy and yummy or homemade buttercream.
And that could not be sacrificed.
So, I mixed up some chocolate buttercream and went to it.
Just pipe it on to the top of the cakes, then dip the cakes into some crushed oreos to serve as the "dirt" in these little pots. {Brian purchased the oreos for this project and came home with Chocolate Oreos - the kind with the chocolate icing inside. Yeah... those are pretty darned good. From what I hear, that is.}
The cookie crumbs really make this project look authentic, so don't skip that part :)
So... this is what your yummy dessert should look like so far...
Cute.
But could be cuter.
That's better :)
A little garden stake and a small stem of mint make a world of difference.
Or you could go with a large stem of mint.
Makes you like like an even better gardener.
You must have Miracle Grow on tap.
Now... from the little I know about gardens, I can tell that gardeners tend to be the organized, label-happy kind of people {and, oh, come on, if you're a gardener you know it's true}, so I determined that this project needed a little garden label stake.
The Limitless Labels dies came in handy. I just cut some larger rectangles, then stamped the grass image and sentiment on the lower half, and folded them over popsicle sticks {it's possible that these are the counting sticks we use for school; good thing school's almost out, right?}
And a little twine with a little sign finishes things off.
The smallest Limitless Labels die fits several of the Garden Variety images... so cute.
Oh my heck, what a perfect sentiment to go along with these sweet little cakes...
And is it just me, or does the little garden spade and pick resemble a spoon and fork? That was possibly my favorite discovery in the Garden Variety set :) The double-ended banner die and rounded arch in the Sending You die set served me well on this one.
Sooo... thoughts? I think these would be the sweetest little treats to have at a baby shower or birthday party! All in all, the seedling cups were only $1.69 for 10 cups and baking in them was really no harder than making cupcakes... such an easy and affordable way to dress everything up, right?
And don't forget to check out all the Garden Variety projects the rest of the Papertrey Ink design team came up with...

WHAT!!! you can bake in fiber pots! This must be the discovery of the century.... how on 'earth' did you think of that! Brilliant! and I've just got to try it myself. I just love this post Jessica - all of it! So I'm going to Pinterest it to share your brilliance and hope this is ok with you.
Christ on a bike!!! You are a genius! This project is simply amazing from beginning to end. Can I come live with you and be your crafting elf? :D
OMG Jess - your project is totally a jaw-dropper!! Every part of it is way cute!
I love it *too* much! Even though I'm not that into chocolate cake (yea, call me a freak I know, but I could seriously eat my own bodyweight in lemon drizzle, ok?).
I really need to make these even so and feed them to all my choccy loving pals!
TFS, hugs, Ruth S
I just had to call my hubby in to show him your choccy goodness - he is going nuts and wants you to send him some. Is that ok?
Hugs, Ruth S ;)
these are toooo cute!! My only complaint is: where were you guys 3 months ago when I did a garden themed program with the girls in church and we had to hand cut and make seed packets (those dies and stamps would have been PERFECT!!) And your idea for the cakes in the fiber pots: yes, our "vegtable" cookies were cute, but I LOVE you cakes!!! (Maybe we'll have to do the garden theme again next year with all the fun Papertrey products!) :-D It would be so much fun: thanks for all the FANTASTIC ideas!!! Hugs!
Oh my goodness! That is the most fantastic post ever! Love the cakes, the pots, the labels, the cookie "dirt", your inspiring creativity, and your humorous blog writing. And the "mint" plants topped them all off so perfectly! Wow! You made me smile after a very long day at the hospital with my husband and I really needed that! I just checked on him, spent time looking at all the PTI reveals and now I am going back to sleep myself. You made my day - I love gardening and virtual gardening in blog land is such fun when it is still rainy in springtime here in Seattle!
You rock! How clever is that! Totally different use for this set than I could have ever came up with. I could see this at a cute garden luncheon! Wow!
Love it!! I am going to try it, it has no price for a dinner party. Thanks a lot.
Dang it, Jess. You, Bets and Maile cost me dinero ... a lot... when it comes to all things PTI.
This month is going to be no exception. ;)
My pocketbook is crying already.
Teri
Very, very clever. I love it... will be trying this some day.
Wow!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Robin
Love your post! I have made potted cakes similar to you, only I used small terracotta pots. Saw the idea one day on Martha Stewart. Worked a treat. Just washed and baked pots in the oven first to clean them, and bonus, I can reuse those pots over and over again. (The only trouble was they looked so real, no one was game enough to eat them! LOL).
Keep these kind of posts coming, they make me laugh! I totally adore the finished result of your baking.
Eveline.
I don't know if my eyes were popping out of my head from your AMAZING cake creations or from laughing so hard at your one-liner comments!!!! I was entertained from the moment I opened your blog this morning. Not only did you give my day a great start with a laugh or two, but what a feast for the eyes!!! Love how you used the stamps and dies:)
You are so funny! Love how your dirt came out, I mean chocolate cakes! Seriously? Totally awesome, serious cuteness!
OMG...both the cake pots and strawberry cookies are ABSOLUTELY adorable. Love them! Thanks for the inspiration!
Ohhh Jessica, you have outdone yourself on this post! Your seedling cups are 1,000 times cuter than those "gummy worm in dirt snack cups" that the kids make in preschool, hee! Plus, your writing skills are so amazing, and have me laughing at ever big and mini word! EXCELLENT post, these are so awesome!
Oh my WORD, these are too flippin' cute!
Another anazing post.....who would of thought to bake in these.....I still can't believe you didn;t set fire to your oven....as that is what would happen to me, but now you have me thinking...what a bout the little ones an dmake tiny pots for the kiddos....fun~fun post! OH my word verification is "licky"...too funny and so fitting!
You take the cake! And my own, personal award for cutest, most creative, yummy looking project for this PTI release. Can't wait to try these!! Thank you for the inspiration.
WOW, I really can't find the words for todays post. You have blown it out of the water on this one. Those cake pots are amazing, and what an idea for a ladies group!! The cookies are so cute - I have read your posts twice and going to head back and read them again - I can't believe what you came up with. This is the PTI post of the day, hands down!!
These are beyond adorable. Pure genius!
These little cakes in the seedling cups are the cutest ever!!! Are you sure these are as easy as cupcakes? Is it really that easy to get the parchement paper in the cups and look so neat, or is this just another one of your many talents? You think of every little detail that makes a project perfect and make me smile as I read your posts. Thank you for each lovely visit to your blog.
Oh man, these cakes are just too cute!!! So, so cleaver. If Nicole did yearly wrap ups and awarded prizes for all the DT creations, you'd certainly win for this project for sure. In fact I can hear Charlie Sheen now, "Winning!" You win, we win, PTI wins...
Thanks Jess, I can't wait to give these a try.
WHAT?? This is amazing!! Angels are singing for sure:)
ADORABLE! (Actually, you had me at "Coke is the nectar of the gods" LOL!) I really thought this was going to be about plants! Yummmmmmmmm! What a delicious and fun project!
Wow. You are amazing. These pots are just the cutest things I have ever seen. I want to eat my computer screen!
one word: brilliant.
I absolutely adored this entire post. Well written, funny, engaging, and above all: clever!
But I have never had a coke in my life so I cannot attest to it being the nectar of the gods...I reserve fresh squeezed Oj for that title! *wink*
Brilliant concept, and your perfectly styled photos could have come straight out of Martha Stewart Living. I bet the cakes tasted pretty good, too!
I think you have outdone yourself!!! I totally love the idea of cupcakes in those seeling pots - genious!!! Great project!
You might have misssed the gardening gene but you got a double dose in the crafting department! WOW! I can't even tell you how impressed I am with your project. (Okay, I just kinda did.)
Absolutely brilliant!!!!! Gonna get me some pots!!
Amazing - what time is dessert served?!
OMG Jessica, you are a homemaking guru and you need to come live with me! This post is another amazing one, do you sleep? Such a delicious post, I need to make these. A few questions...Did you bake the cakes on a cookie sheet? Regular temperature? How long? You are sooooo creative, I love your blog.
Seriously, you are amazing! I'd love just a fraction of your creativity!
I get it now! Your creativity is EXPANDED by "WHAT IF", not LIMITED by "could this possibly work?" Not only is your project the cutest thing I've ever seen, it inspires my desire to embrace "What If". Thanks a bunch!!!
Wow, this cake in the fiber pot is awesome. But the mint sprig on top, clever beyond belief. You Rock! And yes, I laughed all the way through your post.
And your strawberry cookies yesterday were beyond cute too. I want to be you when I grow up!
Jess your project rocks!!! What a great idea! I am all with you on the box cake and I too have to have home made buttercream!! I love how you used the wood grain stamp on the fence! I was not going to get much now I am thinking of all the cool gifts I can make with this set!!!
OMG!! These are so adorable!!!! And your humor is great first thing in the morning. Awesome post!
Wow! All I can say is wow! You did a simply fantabulous job; so very creative! I love your style and am so glad that you are part of the PTI team!! :)
OMG, this is pure brilliance!!!!
You are genius!!!! I may be using this idea for my mom or gram! I love your blog; always makes me smile!!! Thanks!
This has GOT to be the coolest idea ever! I am soooooo doing this for our ladies nite out group!

So earthy and perfect - would make great teacher gifts!
this is so awesome.....im making these for sure!!
You are GENIUS!
Oh my goodness!!!!! What a fun idea!!! You have added a whole new dimension to the stamping world!!! You are totally amazing!!
You are a genius. This is fabulous! I've always used the cute little clay pots, but I love your look so much! Cleverly done!!!
JESS!!!!! This is so fab! Like you, I would love to be a baker...I channel my inner Barefoot Contessa on a regular basis! But now, I'm gonna channel my inner Jess Witty! This is definitely going on my bucket list of things to do for a dinner party! Love it!
This is the most ingenious use of any set this whole release. This has soooooo many possibilities!
This is such a clever idea! Won't they be cute to serve at a dinner party or for a bake sale! I am running out to my nearby Agway and getting those cute seedling cups today. Glad it's Saturday so I can play. Thank you.

Holy cow! I need to tell my friends to get prego stat so I can make these for their baby showers!! You are just too clever!
Holy flying monkeys, are you for REAL lol??? How do you come up with these things? Amazing, that's it, simply amazing :) :) :)
Wow! I came over to your blog expecting some kind of food after yesterdays post, but then I saw this plant project. It thought it was cute, but totally couldn't tell it was cake. lol tooo awesome. So, need to know, how long/ what temperature did you bake these at?
AMAZING!!! So amazing that despite the amount of work involved here, I know I'm going to have to try this some day!
OMG!!!!
THUD!!!
I think I passed out for a bit...
thanks for the lump on my head now :)
GASP...
AMAZING...
STUNNING...
SPECTACULAR...
INCREDIBLE...

I'm BLOWN AWAY...
and now I'm speechless.
What an absolutely neat idea!!
Sue
Super duper UBER WOW!!!!! Not only is your project completely awesome and wonderful (yet DO-able!) but your entertaining way of describing everything is just too adorable! Thank you so very much!
just speechless. totally love the way you write. and just amazed by those darn cakes and all the details. just wow.
What an AMAZING SUPER CUTE IDEA!!!!
LOVE it ... the story was so much fun too!
This is one FABULOUS project. I don't bake anymore (it somehow jumps into my mouth every time), but this is a 'must do'. Pretty as a picture and makes me smile. Thanks for sharing.
FABULOUS! Brilliant idea and SO CUTE!! Well done!
I have just fallen off the couch... these are absolutely amazing. You.are.brilliant. Again, I rarely bake... and if I had to bake a cake it would likely be from a mix so no criticisms here. You're posts always have me in stitches...thanks for putting a smile on my face.
This awesome project is right up my alley. I totally LOVED it! Thanks so much for thinking of it and sharing it!
Genius!! Oh my word! And in terms of not having a green thumb . . .one time I bought an ornamental plant at the store and NO LIE it started dropping leaves while still in the car with me . . . it knew it had no hope! What a great post for humor too, loved it!
you are great!!! thanks so much!
Ok...way too cute! I need to bring these in to my kids teachers!
You are hilarious and those are the cutest treats ever! One day I will make them.
This is so clever!!! And, I am just like you--I can bake anything but have a BLACK thumb. Well, I'm not just like you, because you are super creative, and I follow recipes, web sites and magazine articles--but still... This treat reminds me of a much more sophisticated version of something I make for my girls called 'dirt & worms'--a cup of chocolate pudding covered with crumbled oreos, with gummy worms sticking out. Gross--and they LOVE it. I could serve this to my grown up friends!
Joyce
Wow!! Jessica, these are most adorable and to think they are tasty too!!
Absolutely and completely adorable! You truly are witty!
Trish
FABULOUS project, Jessica!! These turned out SO STINKIN' CUTE!!!! I absolutely LOVE them!!!!
That is an inspired project...such fun and you can eat it too!!!
xoxo Sioux
shut the front door!!!!!
these are so cute!!! I can't wait to try it out- AND have that perfect set to tie it all together!!!
This is papercrafting genius at its finest. You had me at EATING! Thank you for sharing all of your creativity with us. I MUST try this!!!!
I've seen the cookie treatment used on kids desserts before, but these would be great for a ladies event. I love this idea! Thank you for sharing it!
OK, so add "engineer" to the list of the "EVERYTHING" I mentioned yesterday that you're good at. I would totally have screwed up those adorable picket fences around the perimeter of the pots, and never have figured out how to make them go around so perfectly, compensating brilliantly for the angle of the pot...oh wait, that's assuming I would have ever in a millenium even begun to DREAM of a project such as this...*sigh*...if only I had one iota of your creative mind I could die happy. (on a different note, my husband the engineer says that it was probably the moisture in the cakes that prevented the pots from "flashing" in the oven..read "exploding in flames"...so I'm very happy that you had that little bit of fortune and this did NOT happen to you! ;) Seriously, unbelievably perfect, beyond wildly creative, fun-ness & cute-ness! (Along with another wonderfully funny and fun to read posts) A highlight of my Saturday. :)
Genius!
This idea is so genius I shared it with my husband. He was even impressed, and he sees a lot of the scrap blogged stuff, so he's used to seeing the most imaginative! My sister grows chocolate mint, so I'm going to have to snag some of that! I'm in good company, can't seem to grow crap!
This is totally awesome! I can't grow anything either, but I may have to go buy some seedling cups jut to make these. Thank you for sharing!!
LOVED THOSE POTS!!! What an amazing idea!!! How long did you bake them?
I was totally blown away by yesterday's project, but this one totally takes the cake... hehe. ;) Amazing. Someone get this girl an award!
OMG! This project is just sheer genius! I even showed my hubby, who normally I can't be bothered with when it comes to crafty projects, coz he just doesn't understand - but even he is impressed!
I can't wait to recreate these - just stunning, can't get over it. X
Oh my! These are just genius!! How do you think of it, it's just toooo cute!! This will surprise sooo much on the table, love, lov, love the idea and how perfectly you made these!!!
Hugs, Wendy
LOVE,LOVE,LOVE this project! Thanks for the inspiration! I can't wait to get this set and try this project out! :)
The green thumb skipped over me too, but I am so going to have a garden-themed party sometime so I can serve these and impress the heck out of everyone! You have some of the most inventive ideas I've ever seen and your posts always bring a smile to my face!
Love your post, can't decide if I like your writing skills or the PTI products better!
Love the new stamp sets, your creativity, I would have been afraid to bake in those fiber pots, thinking they'd catch on fire, but now I'm definitely filing this post away for a rainy day, so cute.
Thanks for sharing.
You.... are.... AWESOME!!!!!!!
I have those cute little pots and never, ever in my wildest dreams thought of baking in them. Genious. I loved reading your blog and seeing how you came up with such a brilliant idea. I think I will scraplift this idea for the end of the year teacher gifts. :) they will be so surprised when they discover that it's not a real plant!!!!
These are amazing! A. Mazing.
Such a great idea and I can't wait to do something similar.
love it!
omg! Omg! OMG! This is the best project I've seen around by far lately! Can you bottle up some of your creativity and share it with us? I have to try this for a summer party (don't have one planned yet, but will schedule one just for the sake of making these)!
Oh my goodness this is just the most adorable (and delicious) project ever!! LOVE the little 'stake' and all of the special details, this needs to be published in a magazine.
Thanks for the GREAT idea! As a baker/card maker, I personally am VERY happy that you have discovered your inner baker. Keep it up!
I am just gobsmacked. How did you come up with this idea? Your post totally made me laugh out loud too! Thanks for your creativity and humour!!
ARE you kiiiiiidddding me?? BRILLiant.
....and gorgeous.
....and yummy.
i dont normally leave comments - but O..M..G!!! I work in a nursery - and my head is swimming with this!!! best. idea. ever.
Oh there isnt anything to say....everyone above is sure to have used up all the superalitives possible. I will add though that your humour is divine and I have tears rolling down my cheeks...I do have to wonder if your surname really is "Witty" or a very appropriate alias????? Oh someone said she showed her hubby and he wants you to make him some, I showed my hubby and he wants you!! He has a habit of "liking" the blog ladies I visit...hmmm might have to stop him looking! Hope I can get those pots here in Australia :) THANKS!
This is one of the coolest projects I've ever seen! You rock!
Love it. Pinned it. Gotta make it. Thanks for the inspiration!!
THis is brilliant! PINNING right now :)
Can see why you're on PTI's DT as this project is tops. Don't think I would have been brave enough to try baking in fiber pots so glad you did. My luck they would have exploded in my oven. Imagine the look on one's face when they see their dessert in a fiber pot? How fun and oh so clever, Jess!
Too freakin' cute!!!! I'm making these!
This is totally brilliant!!! When I saw the photo initially never did I imagine that it was a cake - I thought it was a pot with mint!!!
Ok you need some kind of award or something for thinking of this one! AWESOME idea - I will sooooo be doing this someday!! You're terrific Jess! :)
WOW! I totally thought those were seedlings, not chocolate cake! LOL
Because I'm me and I am slightly (OK, I mean a lot) paranoid with chemicals and stuff I would not have baked any food in gardening products, but the end result is beyond adorable, and I can only imagine the surprise of the guests who gets that on their plate!! :-D Awesome! :-)
I immediately embraced this adorable idea- darling! My hubby warned however that I should check with Burpee to make sure the pots are safe for edibles. So I did and here is the email answer I rec'd:
It is a cute idea, but we are concerned about the pots being flammable at a high temperature. We recommend baking the cakes in an ovenproof container and then placing them in the fiber pots.
The pots are 100% natural.
Sincerely,
Marsha

W. Atlee Burpee & Co.
I will definitely try this idea the way they recommend- having just finished a 4 month remodel of my kitchen I think it's the safer choice! This is a fab idea & I can't wait to try it for a late Spring party! Thanks so much for sharing with us, you are so talented!
What chromosome on your DNA creative gene am I lacking? WHO walks through the garden dept, sees those fiber pots and thinks" I can bak a cake in this?" Seriously? In my wildest dream I would not think like that. This is definately the cutest project I have found on this world wide web-o-net this year . So stinkin cute I want to have a tea party.
P.S. I dont even like tea! But I do like cake :)
This is the cutest and most creative thing I've ever seen!! I'm just blown away at how cute and fun these are and how you decorated them!!
I'm so glad I actually read this post - I came here from your February five favourites post and I just assumed that these were actually plants you were giving away. The effort that went into making them look convincing must be huge, yet you make it all look so simple. I want to live in your world!
I'm headed out to pick up the supplies for your adorable cakes!! I'm bringing them to my Mom's for Easter! Thanks for sharing this beautiful idea with us!
Jaw open read your post..
I actually just scrolled and look at the photos not read your post. But, when I saw pipe and the composite does't look so real, then I read the middle paragraph. What? cookie crumb? Oreos? what is this post all about? But, Jess, this is out of this world idea. Brilliant3x!!!
Oh my goodness you are so creative! I though this was just a plant, but cake :0
Ok we had a gardening working party day and I served brownies but WISH I'd seen these! I've done the oreo crumbs on top as dirt trick several times but never thought to do it in bio-degradable seedling modules. The parchment works wonderfully. Hmm my pocket book may not thank you tho'!
WOW! this is totally above and beyond. Awesome cute idea. Good luck on your new path, a wise decision. I admire you for it. Blessings.
